Don't Get PinchedA follow-up visit to a Hagerstown seafood shop charged earlier in the month with selling illegal crabs yielded more of the same last Thursday, the Maryland Natural Resources Police reported.

An officer conducting an inspection at Cameron’s Seafood on Dual Highway discovered one bushel with 82 undersized crabs and another with 42 undersized crabs. On Aug. 1, he found one bushel with 110 undersized crabs and another with 59 undersized crabs. Read more »

DNR Releases 2013 Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Numbers

Spawning-age females increased substantially, but low reproduction means fewer crabs

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources today released the 2013 Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey numbers, showing mixed results. The number of spawning-age females increased substantially this year – by 52 percent − indicating that the current management framework to protect adult female crabs is working. However, poor reproduction in 2013 and what appears to be high mortality within the record 2012 year-class resulted in an overall decline in the Bay-wide population.    Read more »

Governor Martin O’Malley Announces Chesapeake Bay Juvenile Blue Crab Population Highest on Record

Governor Martin O’Malley today announced the Chesapeake Bay’s juvenile blue crab population is at the highest level on record, and the overall blue crab population is at its highest level since 1993.

Joined by stakeholders and elected officials, Governor O’Malley revealed the results of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) annual winter dredge survey at Mike’s Crab House overlooking the South river.
