Maryland Launches Streetlight and Outdoor Lighting Efficiency Program: Reduces Energy Consumption, Improves Safety, Benefits Communities

BALTIMORE, MD – The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) announces the immediate opening of the FY22 Streetlight and Outdoor Lighting Efficiency (SOLE) pilot program, which seeks to accelerate the conversion of outdoor lighting to more energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) technology. MEA is offering a total of $2 million on a first-come first-served basis to defray the cost of converting user-owned, pole-mounted light fixtures that illuminate streets, pedestrian paths , parking lots, athletic fields, parks and similar applications.

“Enhanced safety and reduced electricity consumption are just some of the benefits to these lighting upgrades,” said MEA Director Mary Beth Tung. “Improved lighting benefits communities and operators through cost savings and improved aesthetics. The reduction in electricity use reduces stress on the grid and lowers greenhouse gas and other emissions. We are excited about the many positives this pilot program can bring to Maryland.” 

Eligible applicants for this program include Maryland nonprofits, state agencies, counties and incorporated cities, public and private schools, and community colleges. MEA is focusing funds on projects that use LED fixtures to limit light pollution for the benefit of adjacent communities and wildlife. Applicants are asked to document the scope and cost of the proposed upgrade activity. Applicants may apply for up to $500,000 per organization. 

Applications will be accepted for qualifying projects on a first-come first-served basis until April 28, 2022 or when funds are depleted.
