Program that brought first electric fire truck to East Coast in its first year announces availability of $10 million in year two

BALTIMORE – The Maryland Energy Administration today announced the second round of annual funding for the Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicle Grant Program, offering up to $10 million in Fiscal Year 2025 funding to Maryland fleet companies, organizations and communities to further accelerate the adoption of cleaner transportation solutions in the state.

“Maryland is fully engaged in an all-of-the-above approach to reducing climate change-causing emissions, and this program is a great example,” said Maryland Energy Administration Director Paul G. Pinsky. “By providing incentives for a wide range of larger vehicles, from farm equipment to fire trucks, the Maryland Energy Administration is making sure that the ongoing shift to emissions-free electric vehicles does not stop with passenger cars.”

Offered for the first time in Fiscal Year 2024, the Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicle Grant Program invested $8.6 million in new commercial and industrial vehicles state-wide. When fully deployed, the combined impact of these grants will be to cut tailpipe emissions equivalent to more than 500 tanker trucks full of gasoline.

Fiscal Year 2025 Program Highlights:

  • Grant Coverage: Grants cover up to 75% of the incremental cost of eligible vehicles and equipment.
  • Eligible Uses: Funding can be used for the purchase of qualified, newly manufactured medium-duty or heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles and qualified zero-emission heavy equipment for commercial or industrial use. This includes electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.

Successful Fiscal Year 2024 Projects:

  • Sysco Corporation: Replacing 10 battery-electric tractors in Maryland that will use overnight and opportunity charging at its Jessup facility, with new private access charging infrastructure stationed on-site.
  • City of New Carrollton: Funded an electric vehicle for senior and handicap transportation, providing cleaner and more efficient transportation options.
  • Frederick County Government: Introduced an electric fire truck and additional electric buses, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability.
