Animal Waste to Energy Grant Program
Background: A brand new grant, this inventive program challenges Maryland businesses, nonprofits and government agencies to install animal waste to energy projects. The goal is to increase investments in projects that will use animal waste to generate electricity while reducing the environmental impacts that animal wastes can have on Maryland’s valuable natural resources.
Funds Available: $2 million

Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
Background: CHP is an approach to recovering heat that is normally wasted in conventional power generation for use as energy. Conventional methods that produce usable heat and power separately offer a combined efficiency of 45% but a CHP system can operate at an efficiency level of as high as 80%. Maryland’s innovative CHP program earned a perfect score from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) .
Funds Available: $4.025 million

Commercial and Industrial Grant Program
Background: This grant is designed to increase energy savings of 15% or more in Maryland industrial buildings via technology upgrades and operational changes. Examples of institutions who can apply include: churches, senior living facilities, hotels, supermarkets, office buildings, office buildings, retail buildings, office areas associated industrial plants and others. Any commercial, industrial, or non-profit enterprise in the state can apply.
Funds Available: $20,000 – $500,000 per project

Commercial Wood Boiler Grant Program
Background: This is another new program for Maryland and it focuses on the importance of utilizing renewable biomass for energy. The grant challenges local businesses, government agencies and nonprofits to invest in projects that use woody biomass (wood chips or pellets) to generate electric and/or thermal energy while replacing traditional fossil fuels: capitalizing on a plentiful renewable resource in the state.

Freedom Fleet Voucher Program
Background: The state of Maryland provides financial assistance for the purchase of alternative fueled vehicles. The grant applies to both new and converted vehicles registered Maryland. Companies and nonprofits can upgrade to compressed natural gas (CNG), dedicated liquefied natural gas (LNG), propane powered, hydrogen, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid and medium/heavy duty plug-in electric vehicles. Data Center Energy Efficiency Grant Pilot Program
Background: Maryland is the first state to offer a program that encourages data centers to seek energy efficiency. According the US Department of Energy, data centers are one of the most energy-intensive building types, consuming 10 to 50 times the energy per floor space of a typical commercial office building. Our pilot program supports the robust and growing information technology sector within Maryland and provides companies with long-term, sustainable solutions to data center energy waste.
Funds Available: $20,000 to $200,000 per eligible project

Maryland Smart Energy Communities
Background: Any incorporated Maryland local government (city, town, or county) can become a Maryland Smart Energy Community (MSEC). MEA assists MSEC applicants through the grant process that is designed to lower utility and fuel expenses, support sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nearly $7 million in grant funding has been awarded over the first two years of this program for Maryland communities.
Funds Available: $1.6 Million for new and existing MSEC communities
