September 2024 Honorees

John Lawlah
John Lawlah is the Maintenance Supervisor of the Hyattsville District Court/Multi-Service Center. John has been with the State for almost 11 years. In the short time I have had the pleasure to serve as John’s Regional Manager, John has impressed me with his dedication to his job. John oversaw the recent project to do scheduled maintenance on our electrical equipment at the Hyattsville courthouse. Being a courthouse, John had to coordinate with multiple organizations on a few Saturdays to get the project achieved with no disruption to the courts. Even when things did not go smoothly, and the project took longer than expected, John stayed on top of things until completion. John is a hard worker. He puts the needs of the building and tenants first. John has shown that he can handle anything put in his lap.

Leon Leytman
The USM has had an ongoing project for a Workday implementation, spanning from October 2021 to June 2024, which has concluded successfully. The USM consortium, consisting of five schools—Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Frostburg State University, Salisbury University, and the University of Baltimore—went live on a single instance of Workday under the “Maryland Connect” initiative on July 1, 2024. As part of their ongoing operations, Leon Leytman worked hand-in-hand with multiple representatives from the five schools over the last several months to have set up the process to transfer files of SBR/VSBE Data reports to USM on a monthly basis. This summer marks the start of successful, automated, timely delivery to USM from eMMA. This marks a significant milestone for the USM consortium and the Maryland Connect initiative. I recognize Leon Leytman for his acuity, patience, and diligence to setup, test, retest, and coordinate with USM representatives of the five schools to ensure all have been able to successfully receive this data for now and the future.

Sergeant Darryl Barrett
Sergeant Darryl Barrett has been tasked with supervising the dayshift at the MCP Annapolis Detachment. She has been in the position for just over a year. Sgt. Barrett spent her prior years as an Officer with MCP and was a former Baltimore City Sheriff. Sgt. Barrett is a member of the MCP Peer Support Team and makes herself available to assist members of the agency and other state employees with meeting life’s challenging moments. Sgt. Barrett has been my partner on dayshift since her promotion to Sergeant in July of 2023. She is always eager to challenge herself with learning new skills and has shouldered her responsibility with a constant sense of duty. Sgt. Barrett is a spiritual, thoughtful, and caring person. She puts people first and is an inspiring leader. Sgt. Barrett can be relied upon to handle the daily duties as the shift supervisor to the best of her ability. She has effectively managed the needs of her subordinates and coordinates the implementation of policies, goals, and assigned tasks of her supervisors. Sgt. Barrett has four adult children who rely on her steadfast guidance and nurturing. Sgt. Barrett is a reliable shift partner and is a great example of a team player. She embodies the spirit of the Department of General Services.

Tyler Kurtz
My Catonsville multi-service center has a green roof. Green roofs provide shade, help reduce the roof surface temperature and the overall surrounding air. While my team members care for the landscaping throughout the facility it is easy to overlook the lawn on the roof that no one sees and constituents can’t complain about. However, my team has such pride in their building they make it a point to visit the roof top and give it the same attention they give the rest of the property landscape.
