Hogan Administration Announces $5.9 Million in Federal Surplus Delivered to Marylanders in Need in 2nd Quarter 2018

Department of General Services Works with Federal Program to Secure Surplus Resources

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Hogan administration today announced that in the second quarter of 2018, the Maryland Department of General Services (DGS), which is the agency of record in the State of Maryland for the Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program, secured and delivered more than $5.9 million in federal surplus property to Marylanders in need, public schools, non-profit organizations, municipal agencies, federally certified 8(a) firms, and local communities.

“The Department of General Services has been a strong leader in their work with the federal surplus property program by proactively finding opportunities to bring food, school supplies, computers, and other resources directly into Maryland communities that are in need of assistance,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Our administration will continue to explore ways to help our citizens through this successful and unique partnership.”

“Our department is committed to building an active network that connects Maryland citizens and nonprofits in a beneficial way to government services and programs,” said DGS Secretary Ellington E. Churchill, Jr. “By being proactive and actively connecting with our federal partners, DGS is able to bring valuable resources directly to Maryland communities and businesses.”

The following is a list of the federal surplus property that was secured by the Hogan Administration during the second quarter of 2018 from federal agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the General Services Administration (GSA), and then delivered throughout the state between April and July of this year:

• Baltimore City Public Schools and Community Center
  • Matthew Henson Elementary School (50 laptops, 30 computer mouses, 2 printers, 20 docking stations)
  • Langston Hughes Community & Business Center (20 filing cabinets)
  • Edmondson-Westside High School (150 CPUs, 12 laptops, 150 computer monitors)

• Federal Property Transfers that included office furniture, audio equipment, washer & dryers, and other surplus property were delivered to the following nonprofit organizations, federally certified 8(a) businesses, universities and local agencies, including volunteer fire and police departments, during the second quarter of 2018:
  • Eternal Life in Christ Ministries (various pieces of furniture)
  • Norte Dame of Maryland University (various pieces of furniture)
  • Maryland Department of General Services (various pieces of furniture)
  • Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company (various pieces of furniture)
  • Glen Echo Volunteer Fire Department (3 washer/dryer stacked, 3 three-way speakers)

• Statewide Donation and Distribution of FEMA Surplus Meal Kits:
  • Forty-six (46) truckloads of meal kits (approximately 1.2 million meals), valued at approximately $5.7 million, were picked up from a FEMA Warehouse in Birmingham, Alabama and delivered to Maryland food banks and nonprofits that service needy and impoverished children and families.

This calendar year, the Department has distributed $9.4 million in Federal Surplus materials to Marylanders.
