May Honorees

Joe Mayne & Bill Ketner were Caught Doing Great Service. When an urgent repair was needed in one of the Government House restrooms, Joe Mayne stepped up to help without any complaints, using some of his own tools and putting his general contractor skills to use. Bill worked right alongside him and ensured that the Governor’s staff onsite were kept in the loop. Joe and Bill worked together to complete the job efficiently and effectively, ensuring that their work was top quality. They under-promised and over-delivered on a large scale in meeting the First Family’s expectations, overcoming many obstacles and a couple of surprises. They kept costs down by completing a lot of the work themselves and facilitating the work of the contractors that had to be brought in.

On February 22nd of this year DCE was contacted regarding a ceiling collapse at the Sweeney District Court in Annapolis. Matt Dennies volunteered to investigate the issue. The ceiling in the courtroom had a structural failure, fortunately this happened over the holiday weekend and there were no injuries. This also raised a concern for the other courtrooms. Matt contacted an engineer and a contractor and had them onsite the next day. Along with completing the repairs to the original courtroom the team was proactive and completed reinforcements to the bulkheads in four other courtrooms. In all working double shifts and weekends Matt and the team completed the repairs a week ahead of the planned schedule. For his dedication and willingness to take on an emergency project we recognize Matt Dennies for doing great service.

Lt. David Lewis and Lt. Sandra Herndon were each named Acting Commanders of their respective Divisions for a period of ten weeks while the Division Captains attended training. They each stepped up and immediately embraced their roles as Acting Commanders handling every issue that presented itself during their tenure. Their professionalism and dedication to duty and the State of Maryland assured that the operations in their divisions continued seamlessly. They used sound judgement and decision making to maintain the ever-delicate balance of security and safety while simultaneously espousing customer service and the values of Doing Great Service. Each of them handled several situations that required decision making and quick thinking. They did so flawlessly, keeping the command and stakeholders apprised of developing information and reported the positive outcomes. Lt. Herndon and Lt. Lewis should be celebrated for stepping up and performing admirably in their acting roles.
