January Honorees

Monica Franklin, Tyler Russell, Emmanuel Smith, Julissa Marcano, and Brandford Quartey were faced with an arduous, never before done task. I asked for volunteers and these 5 stepped up. They learned anew process, they completed their tasks and they are now in a position to help others with this task. They are actuallygoing to be assisting DoIT with this task as well. They ran into issues and they worked tirelessly to get the job done. I want to give them a pat on the back for being Caught Doing Great Service!!

Late in the evening of Monday, December 26, after days of temperatures that never got above the teens, a water pipe ruptured in the House of Delegates Office Building in Annapolis.  Water ran onto the floor of the House Ways and Means Committee hearing room and the adjacent staff offices.  It flowed into hallways and onto the marble floors of the building’s main entrance.  It also entered gaps in the floor and walls and soon covered the first floor of the garage below.  Some 13,000 square feet of office space ended up under water as much as two inches deep. Once the incident was discovered, the Annapolis Facilities Management team swung into action.  Staff were roused from their beds and rushed to the building   to mitigate the damage.  They stopped the flow, moved desks and chairs out of the way, and used squeegees and shop vacuums to extract the water.  The work took all night and went into the next day. In the end, the water went into about 13,000 square feet of the building.  The humidity ruined a lot of wallboard, baseboard, ceiling tiles and furniture.  But it could have been much worse.  Thanks to a lot of hard work and missed sleep, the space was quickly turned over to a remediation company to dry out so the affected areas could be repaired.  The damage was extensive – it took a full two weeks to get everything done – but the space was ready when the General Assembly convened on January 11. For their extraordinary efforts and commitment, here in alphabetical order are the DGS Facilities Management staff who were caught Doing Great Service:  Cindy Beres, Aaron Dennis, Ryan Elliott, Bill Eubanks, Duane Gill, Lisa Hall, Clay Johns, Robert Levine, Joe Mayne, Dave Shackelford and Richard Thomas.

Letter from Governor Hogan: I write today to express my support and admiration for Officer Daryl Barrett of the Maryland Capitol Police. Officer Barrett has been a a steadfast presence on the second floor of the State House and across the Annapolis Complex, where she displays a constant commitment to providing exceptional service. Officer Barrett always has a smile on her face, a positive attitude, and a heart to serve. She has taken the time and interest to get to know many of the Governor’s Office staff by name, and consistently goes above and beyond her responsibilities to assist and support our team. As our administration prepares to leave office, her kindness and selfless service will not soon be forgotten. Officer Barrett is a great leader, public servant, and friend. The Maryland Capitol Police is fortunate to count her among its ranks.
