The Intern Experience: Students see green jobs up close

Filing reports? Fetching coffee? What do you think this is—a boring bureaucracy gig? Over the summer, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources welcomed 22 interns in seven units to gain invaluable hands-on experience. Several trips into the field were also arranged for maximum exposure to different areas of expertise, as well as an opportunity to meet others in the program.

In pursuit of an environmental studies degree, former Marine, Zach Carnegie, spent his summer with the Maryland Forest Service at Morgan Run. Zach spent his previous two summers with the Maryland Park Service.

Aspiring videographer Nathan Simms had the chance to film some exciting field work with the Office of Communications. Here he is recording mussel relocation efforts, which you can read all about here!

 

Living resources assessment intern Daphne Warner and Nathan jumped at the chance to go on a police ride along to see what officers do out on the water.

 

Coastal restoration and research intern Brittany Babbington and her supervisor Kim Hernandez participated in a coordinated beach cleanup effort at Sandy Point State Park.
