Grant Money Available for Maryland Volunteer Fire Departments

Funds Provide Financial and Technical Assistance to Enhance Capabilities

Two firefighters battle blazing wildfire

In Maryland, about 5,000 wildfires are reported each year, and more than 300 volunteer fire departments across the state respond to these blazes, which, on average, burn less than 10 acres.

To assist local fire departments, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is once again offering critical grant funding through its Volunteer Fire Assistance Program to help fortify and strengthen wildland firefighting capabilities statewide.

“Volunteer firefighters provide critical lifesaving and property protection services to their communities and fellow citizens, and rely on these grants to help them stay equipped and prepared,” Maryland Forest Service State Fire Supervisor Monte Mitchell said. “This funding enables our first responders to acquire and maintain the skills and specialized tools they need to battle wildfires in their area and across Maryland.”

The grant program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, requires local matching funds of 50 percent, with a maximum award of $3,000. Volunteer fire departments can submit one grant application per year. Applications will be accepted until July 16, 2018.

Interested applicants should contact 410-260-8503 or email Monte Mitchell with any comments or questions.
