New Clean Marina in Anne Arundel County
Department of Natural Resources Certifies Harbour Cove Marina
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has certified Harbour Cove Marina in Deale as the latest Maryland Clean Marina. The facility earned the recognition after adopting best management practices from the Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook, meeting all environmental and regulatory requirements, and passing a site inspection.
“Every clean marina reaches hundreds of people through their interactions with customers; it has a ripple effects throughout the boating community and bay,” Clean Marina Program Director Donna Morrow said. “The department stands ready to work with any marina manager or operator who wants to mitigate and reduce their environmental impact.”
Harbour Cove Marina is located on Rockhold Creek and has 65 slips in the water and 197 storage spaces. It has a service department that handles electrical and mechanical issues as well as routine maintenance. The marina has a fuel dock, lounge, pool and pumpout station. Additionally, it captures pressure wash water from boat bottoms, and recycles batteries and metals. The marina also plans to participate in oyster restoration activities in the near future.
“I think the Maryland Clean Marina program is really good for the marina and our customers, plus we like knowing we’re doing what we can to enhance, protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay,” Marina Manager Peter Muller said. Mueller led the certification process, which required compiling records, permits and safety plans.
There are now 153 Maryland Clean Marina certified statewide. These facilities have voluntarily accepted department recommendations from the guidebook and undergone a required site inspection. The department constantly inspects and monitors certified facilities to ensure compliance with the program that promotes boatyard, marina or yacht club efforts to reduce pollution.
