Wear Your Life Jacket to Work May 17

Department Shows Marylanders How to Save Lives

Photo of Splash the Water Safety Dog and employees wearing life jacketsThe Maryland Department of Natural Resources is proud to once again participate in National Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day on Friday, May 17.

Anyone driving along Taylor Avenue in Annapolis between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. will see many department staffers suited-up with various styles of safety equipment as they use the crosswalk on their way to Tawes State Office Building.

“Annapolis commuters may do some double-takes when they see our outerwear, but that’s the whole point,” Maryland Natural Resources Police Superintendent Col. Robert Ziegler said. “We are bringing much-needed attention to water and boating safety – and that’s one of our core missions.”

Members of the department’s Safety Education and Outreach Unit will be stationed in the Naval Academy Stadium’s Gate 6 Parking Lot to provide customized fits and educational awareness in hopes of spreading the “Wear It!” message far and wide. A digital traffic sign will also lend a hand.

The event is open to state employees as well as the general public. Those who are unable to join us are encouraged to participate independently and help support the cause.

In 2018, Maryland reported 132 boating accidents. Tragically, 16 of those were fatalities — a 167 percent increase from the previous year. Statistics show most fatalities could have been avoided with the use of a life jacket.

Ahead of National Safe Boating Week, which begins May 18, Maryland Natural Resources Police and the U.S. Coast Guard have also held events to remind boaters of safety practices, including common sense practices and laws. More information on how to enjoy Maryland’s boating season safely is available the department’s website.
