Assateague State Park Campground Improvement Project Postponed

New Expected Start Date in October 2018

Beach and Sand Dunes at Assateague State Park

Planned campground construction and improvements at Assateague State Park have been rescheduled to begin in October 2018.

The project plans to relocate campgrounds roads and shore up eroding sand dunes, resulting in a more sustainable beach with stronger dunes that can protect the park’s amenities and campgrounds.

Due to the complexities of the state procurement process, the Assateague State Park Campground Improvement Project‘s start date has been delayed a year, which in turn affected the proposed completion date. To avoid disturbing campers, patrons and visitors, construction has been postponed until the fall of 2018.

Citizens who had an existing park reservation will continue to have a reservation. The vast majority of campers with 2018 reservations will have the same site and will simply receive a revised name. A small number of campers with reservations at sites that were expected to change substantially will be contacted by our reservation service provider to identify an alternative site that best fits their need. All campers with existing reservations will be sent a revised confirmation letter confirming any change.

Additionally, due to the revised project start date, campers with existing reservations (Oct. 8-28, 2018) in the affected areas will be contacted by the reservation service provider to identify an alternative site that best fits their need. Assateague State Park reservations are closed at this time to facilitate the transition of existing reservations. Campers may cancel, create or modify a reservation after Jan. 8, 2018.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Park Service appreciate the patience of our citizens and guests as we go through this construction and procurement process. Anyone requiring additional information can call 410-641-2120.
