Maryland Watershed Forester Earns Regional Award

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ own Jamie Weaver was named Forester of the Year by the Northeastern Area Association of State Foresters. Weaver, a watershed forester, works to enhance forest lands and water quality in Baltimore and Carroll counties.

“Jaime’s hard work and accomplishments are a source of great pride for our entire agency,” Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. “The fact that he’s been recognized on this level is a testament to his reputation and history of success”.

Weaver received this award for his exceptional work in engaging landowners in forest management and planting to meet streamside buffer goals. Competition was steep. He was up against the winners from 19 states in the northeast ─ from Maine to Maryland, and Missouri to Minnesota.

As an employee of the Maryland Forest Service, Weaver has been instrumental in the establishment and maintenance of countless acres of riparian forest and has pioneered initiatives that advance stewardship ethics and action among private landowners. Additionally, he has worked proactively to develop comprehensive weed control and reinforcement plans on forest buffer planting sites in need of remediation and has coordinated multiple efforts with agency partners.

Following his graduate work at the University of Maine, Jaime began an impressive career in forestry, working with the U.S. Forest Service, the Nature Conservancy, and private consulting firms before joining the department.

Jamie received his award at the Northeastern Area Association of State Foresters Cooperative Forest Management Supervisors meeting in DuBois, Pa. on April 12.
