Four men and a juvenile have been charged with illegal waterfowl hunting on Gibson Island in Anne Arundel County by the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Bryan Webb, 57, of Pasadena, David Butler, 51, of Gibson Island, John Tracey, 58, of Owings Mills, and Charles Vieth, 58, of Reisterstown, were issued citations for hunting waterfowl over a baited area. Tracey also was issued a citation for hunting with an unplugged shotgun. A juvenile was issued a warning for hunting over a baited area. The last citation in the case was written last Friday.

Acting on a tip, an officer checked the beach at Mountain Point at the tip of the island and found corn washed on shore near an offshore stationary hunting blind. Officers kept the area under surveillance and on Jan. 24 – the last day of duck season – found five hunters in the blind and in an anchored Jon boat. A large quantity of shelled corn was found in the boat launching area.

Hunting over bait carries a pre-payable fine of $500. Hunting with an unplugged shotgun carries a pre-payable fine of $250.

In Washington County, a Pennsylvania man faces multiple charges after he attempted to elude officers investigating illegal deer hunting activity.

Harry Marvin Snyder Jr., 43, of Mercersburg, received citations on Monday for failing to stop for police officers, reckless driving, negligent driving, speeding and spinning his vehicle’s wheels.

Officers were at a residence on Mercersburg Road near the Maryland state line, when two men left the scene. A passenger in the truck shouted out the window as the truck drove off. The NRP patrol vehicle followed, with its emergency lights flashing, but did not chase the truck, which got away.

Two days later, Snyder called NRP and admitted being the driver of the truck.

Snyder will be scheduled for trial on the charge of eluding police in Washington District Court. If found guilty of the four other charges, he could be fined a maximum of $810.
