DNR Offers Exciting New Programs and Exhibits at the State Fair

When it comes to animal magnetism, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is second to none. Meet its collection of critters and the people who know them best at the Maryland State Fair, an end-of summer ritual for tens of thousands of families that begins Aug. 28.

“The state fair is an informal venue to showcase DNR’s people and programs, and to share our passion for and knowledge of Maryland’s natural resources,” said DNR Secretary Mark Belton. “Bring your cameras and questions. We can’t wait to help you connect with our department and the outdoors.”

In addition to the fixed exhibits* found in the Mosner Miller Building, DNR has special presentations for the weekends:

• Park naturalists will introduce visitors to animal ambassadors from the Scales and Tales program. One-hour live reptile shows will be held: Aug. 29 & 30 and Sept. 5 & 6, at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. on the Carolina Carport Free Stage in the My Maryland State Fair Park.
• Natural Resources Police officers and their K-9 police partners will have a meet and greet on Aug. 29 & 30, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
• Get your picture taken with NRP’s new mascot, Splash the Water Safety Dog, Sept. 5 & 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Mosner Miller Building will feature interactive exhibits, live reptile displays and information on everything from state park adventures to boating and hunting safety. Visitors can learn about DNR’s photo contest, Youth Fishing Club, Color Maryland Green student art contest, all-ages outdoor wildlife programs, volunteer opportunities and more. DNR exhibits are open Monday through Thursday 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

*Due to risk of Avian Flu, the Maryland Department of Agriculture has imposed a ban on birds at this year’s State Fair. In compliance with this ruling, the Maryland Park Service’s Scales and Tales exhibits and programs will not include Birds of Prey.
