Natural Resources Police LogoA Garrett County man was arrested on multiple impaired driving charges Monday after a Maryland Natural Resources Police officer stopped him outside New Germany State Park for erratic driving.

Stephen Dale Wilt, 55, of Grantsville, was charged with three counts of impaired driving, including DUI, driving on an expired license and drinking in a state park.

An officer checking anglers at the park noticed Wilt arriving and detected a strong odor of alcohol. Wilt was stopped as he left the park. He had slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and failed a field sobriety test.

The officer drove Wilt to the Maryland State Police barrack in Cumberland, where he registered a .10 on the breathalyzer. A blood alcohol content of .08 blood is proof of DUI in Maryland.

Wilt has not yet been scheduled to appear in Garrett District Court. If found guilty of DUI, Wilt could be fined up to $1,000, be jailed for a year and have his driving privileges revoked for six months.
