For both U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Joe Llewellyn and U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Aarion Franklin, it was a life-changing experience as they activated on that fateful day and have continued to serve Maryland and their nation throughout the last two decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What started out as a normal day in September, changed the world when a commercial airplane crashed into the World Trade Center North Tower.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6839\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6839\" class=\"wp-image-6839\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-1024x731.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-1024x731.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-300x214.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-768x549.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-1536x1097.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/170622-Z-UY654-1021-2048x1463.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><sup><em>Llewellyn is overseeing an active shooter training exercise.<\/em><\/sup><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe had a flight for that day and we had our aircraft picked out,\u201d said Llewellyn, who was a C-130 Hercules pilot with the 135th Airlift Squadron, Maryland Air National Guard. \u201cI was in the crew chief\u2019s room when we found out that the first aircraft had hit the World Trade Center.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At first, Llewellyn had little reason to be concerned. The reports he received did not convey any malicious intent. Without knowing the scale of the damage, Llewellyn and his fellow Airmen at the 175th Wing were not too alarmed. But that all changed when the second plane hit the WTC South Tower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe whole feeling in the flight room changed from \u2018hey this is another day\u2019 to \u2018let&#8217;s get ready to go to work,\u2019\u201d said Llewellyn. \u201cAt the time, there were only two [aircraft] that were flight ready, and in about three hours [&#8230;] there were eight aircraft ready to go to war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Llewellyn began preparing for his mission, concurrently, Franklin was preparing for his.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Franklin became aware of the attacks while working as a civilian transportation planner with the Maryland Aviation Administration at Baltimore Washington International Airport. Initially, Franklin and his coworkers thought the first plane was an accident. However, while in a conference room in the airport, they watched a second plane crash. Moments later Franklin received a phone call from the 290th Military Police Company alerting him to go pick up equipment and report to the armory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before Franklin arrived at his unit, two more planes had crashed, one into the Pentagon and Flight 93 into a field in Pennsylvania.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6836\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/FB_IMG_1452529355894.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6836\" class=\"wp-image-6836\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/FB_IMG_1452529355894.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/FB_IMG_1452529355894.jpg 492w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/FB_IMG_1452529355894-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><sup>Franklin stands for photo with local national in Afghanistan.<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe all went to the Pentagon within a few hours [of the attack],\u201d said Franklin, who was recently activated to support the MDARNG and state of Maryland with the equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine as a part of the Vaccine Equity Task Force. \u201cI vividly remember a section of the building was on fire, I didn&#8217;t think it would still be on fire, when we got [t]here.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Franklin\u2019s mood quickly shifted from quiet shock to one of action. His mission was to physically secure the building alongside other first responders. For Franklin and many other members of the 115th Military Police Battalion, 9\/11 did not end that day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThree days afterwards, there was a general who came up me, and he just kind of wept for a few moments,\u201d said Franklin about serving at the Pentagon. \u201cHe pointed out his office and said, &#8216;You know, that&#8217;s where I would have been if I wasn&#8217;t in a meeting.\u2019 He talked about losing his staff and he just kind of stood there quietly by himself. And then he walked away. And, you know, moments like that really resonate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Franklin was just beginning his on-going mission at the headquarters of the Department of Defense, Llewellyn and his unit prepared for a mission to transport medical personnel from Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia to New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6838\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/D3S_5370.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6838\" class=\"wp-image-6838\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/D3S_5370.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/D3S_5370.jpg 688w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/09\/D3S_5370-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><sup><em>Franklin speaks at a military graduation.<\/em><\/sup><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat was surreal about it is, I [served] in Desert Storm. I&#8217;ve done a lot prior to this point but some of my crew had not,\u201d said Llewellyn, who is now the director of staff for the MDANG. \u201cWe were loading up, putting our M9s on and stepping out in our home base. Very surreal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After landing in Virginia, due to the complexity of the effort Llewellyn and his flight crew were grounded for five days awaiting orders. Once a mission was assigned, they transported a rescue team from Virginia to New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNobody was talking. It was very sad, somber,\u201d said Llewellyn as they flew by New York City. \u201cIt really hit home, the world&#8217;s gonna change. I\u2019ve learned to celebrate life&#8217;s events differently, you know, things that weren&#8217;t as important, \u2018Oh, it&#8217;s just a birthday and I&#8217;m gonna miss that,.\u2019 That&#8217;s, that&#8217;s a major day. And who knows if we&#8217;ll be here for the next one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Franklin\u2019s reflections of that day are echoed by Llewellyn. He is grateful for his country and the opportunity to wear the uniform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think we take life for granted a lot. We take the United States of America for granted, the freedoms that we have here that other countries don&#8217;t have,\u201d stated Llewellyn. \u201cI&#8217;ve traveled the world. And I can&#8217;t say that there&#8217;s another place greater than where I live right now. I don&#8217;t really think I take the world or our country for granted, but I may have at that point.
