The team specializes in helicopter rescue and responds to natural disasters and other emergencies that require an aerial extraction when different modes of transportation are incapable of reaching a victim(s).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;This exercise helps bring everybody up to speed on the training techniques,&#8221; said Brandon Watkins, a leader of one of four squadrons in the MD-HART and a Baltimore County firefighter. &#8220;Get everybody established because they haven&#8217;t done a live drill for the past year and to review all the rescue techniques with some of the newer pilots.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MD-HART is made up of 23 personnel that operate out of different fire departments in Baltimore County, Harford County, Howard County, and Montgomery County, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6643\" width=\"342\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51271552725_25a7d1beb4_k.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t hope for a better group of guys to work with,&#8221; said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Teri Thomas, a UH-60 pilot for C Co., 1st Battalion, 169th Aviation Regiment, 29th Combat Aviation Brigade. &#8220;I get a lot of support from their end [MD-HART] and our end [MDNG] to make this [partnership] happen.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MD-HART was formed in 2008 in response to multiple tropical storms and hurricanes that had hit the East Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 2008, the team has assisted in emergency relief efforts nationally, such as Hurricane Florence in 2018 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;The National Guard is here for the community, and our local fire departments are a part of the community,&#8221; said Thomas. &#8220;This training is important because we never know when we&#8217;re going to be called upon or when the next hurricane is going to strike, and we want to make sure we are ready when needed.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/07\/51270515676_0f23d0be89_k.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MD-HART collaborates with other State teams and agencies, including Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;The future of HART is expansion.
