However, thanks to a couple of Soldiers in the Maryland Army National Guard, one less death was added to those statistics when they reacted to a single-vehicle car crash that occurred in Huntingtown, Maryland, on April 29, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, it\u2019s weird because it was kind of a blur,\u201d said U.S. Army Sgt. Joseph Alemany, a medical laboratory specialist, assigned to the Maryland National Guard\u2019s 104th Medical Company Area Support based in Reisterstown, Maryland. \u201cAnd when I kind of play this back in my mind, I don\u2019t think there was any conscious thought on my part to actually stop [the car], it was kind of instinctive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Army Maj. Terry Schiffbauer, a physician assistant in the Medical Detachment, also in Reisterstown, and Alemany\u2019s\u00a0actions that day received praise from senior leadership throughout the MDNG organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that it was really neat that they pulled over and rendered aid until E.M.S. arrived,\u201d said U.S. Army Major Jamie Saffel, commander of the MDNG\u2019s State Medical Detachment. \u201cIt was just right timing, and helping people is what we\u2019re in the business of doing here in the Maryland National Guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Alemany\u2019s 19 years of military service, he has split time between the active duty Army and the MDNG.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/1909975_1022510599240_7434_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6260  alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/1909975_1022510599240_7434_n-246x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/1909975_1022510599240_7434_n-246x300.jpg 246w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/1909975_1022510599240_7434_n.jpg 496w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/75446583_10214692227395544_2412653889472954368_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6259  alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/75446583_10214692227395544_2412653889472954368_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/75446583_10214692227395544_2412653889472954368_n-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/05\/75446583_10214692227395544_2412653889472954368_n.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><\/a>\u201cHaving those military drills with patient assessment and combat casualty care allows for muscle memory to kind of take over,\u201d said Alemany. \u201cAnd then you go, \u2018Okay, where do I start?\u2019 A.B.C. Airway, breathing, circulation, and these things are drilled over and over again. So, when these events do occur, your actions are instinctive, and the military training that I had is the reason why I knew what to do at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alemany and Schiffbauer\u2019s actions that day possibly saved lives on two fronts. Before the car crash, Alemany and Schiffbauer were on their way to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to the Saint Mary\u2019s County Health Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not taken the time to process people calling me a hero,\u201d said Alemany. \u201cIt\u2019s weird when you hear it about yourself. I would never describe what we did as heroic.
