Projects such as these help to improve military readiness while simultaneously providing quality services to communities throughout Maryland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-609\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-3.jpg\" alt=\"738-3\" width=\"675\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-3.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-3-300x99.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good opportunity for us to do work in the community,\u201d said Pfc. Keith Sims, a 244th interior electrician with seven years of experience. \u201cIt\u2019s good training for Soldiers who don\u2019t have the experience as some of us who do this in the civilian world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s office identified numerous fire stations with substandard kitchens that could be refurbished as part of the training partnership. The chosen unit \u2014 Engine 45 \u2014 is a historic fixture in its community, having served the Mount Washington area since 1951.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the firefighters spoke about the importance of the camaraderie associated with sharing a meal together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was in fair shape when I got here, but it&#8217;s been in steady decline,\u201d said pump operator Harry Jackson, a former Soldier and 14-year member of Engine 45. &#8220;I can&#8217;t remember the last time we cooked a meal using the stove in the kitchen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-607\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-1.jpg\" alt=\"738-1\" width=\"675\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-1.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-1-300x99.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many firefighters had stopped using the kitchen due to the poor condition of the stoves and sinks. Those who celebrated Father&#8217;s Day at the firehouse used the grill outside to cook their meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was falling apart,\u201d said Lieutenant Henry Frazier, a firefighter with Engine 45. \u201cMost of the stove burners didn&#8217;t work. The plumbing was bad. There were holes in the sink. It needed to be replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-20130617-A-CY398-015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-610 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-20130617-A-CY398-015.jpg\" alt=\"The Maryland Army National Guard\u2019s 244th Engineer Company completed the first innovative community based training project in a partnership with the City of Baltimore June 25, 2013. After the countertops were installed, the Soldiers completed the job by connecting the fixtures, the sink, the garbage disposal, stove, range hood and seven electrical outlets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to be in the spotlight. Anything that\u2019s a positive reflection on both units (Engine 45 and the 224th) is great,\u201d said Captain Jason Turner, a firefighter with Engine 45. \u201cWe\u2019re the firefighters that work here who are in need of this repair. For us to receive this benefit, it\u2019s overwhelming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 244th is based out of the Melvin H. Cade Armory in Baltimore, the former home of the 231st Transportation Truck Battalion, the only Maryland National Guard unit ordered to active duty to support the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-20130618-A-CY398-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-611 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-20130618-A-CY398-001.jpg\" alt=\"The Maryland Army National Guard\u2019s 244th Engineer Company completed the first innovative community based training project in a partnership with the City of Baltimore June 25, 2013. Vertical engineers typically provide the construction required in the development of base camps. They also construct, repair and maintain other facilities and infrastructure as required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of them,\u201d said Sgt. Nathan Schaffer, a squad leader in the 244th. \u201cJust watching how much they\u2019ve evolved from a year ago, and now they\u2019re doing kitchens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This project gave leaders the opportunity to lead not just a small team of single trades but project management, added Schaffer. \u201cA leader has to know how to keep track of plumbers, electricians and carpenters, working all three into a scenario so that they aren\u2019t bumping into each other all day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 244th was activated in 2006 and has responded to a variety of natural disasters in Maryland. The unit is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in September to fulfill its federal mission by building the infrastructure for the Afghan National Army.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-20130618-A-CY398-056.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-612 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/738-20130618-A-CY398-056.jpg\" alt=\"The Maryland Army National Guard\u2019s 244th Engineer Company completed the first innovative community based training project in a partnership with the City of Baltimore June 25, 2013. I think it\u2019s incredible that the Soldiers can be faced with both a federal and state mission and hold up their end,\u201d said Brig. Gen. Peter C.
