Cade Armory was dedicated to 1st Sgt. Lloyd R. Scott, Sr., during a ceremony. Scott enlisted as a private at the end of World War II and was ordered to active duty to serve in Korea with the 231st Transportation Truck Battalion \u2013 now the 229th Main Support Battalion. Scott worked at Cade Armory from 1960 until his retirement in 1986 with 41 years and five months of military service.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-227.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-566\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-227.jpg\" alt=\"166-20090530-a-8334h-227\" width=\"675\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-227.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-227-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Scott joined the Army Sept. 7, 1945, and was assigned to the 231st which began as an African-American independent city militia company in Baltimore in February 1879.\u00a0 The militia companies were patriotic social clubs made up of officers and enlisted who competed in military drills. The unit called itself \u201cThe Monumental City Guards\u201d and was accepted as an infantry company in 1882 into the Maryland National Guard \u2013and was re-designated the 1st Separate Company.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-556\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-011.jpg\" alt=\"166-20090530-a-8334h-011\" width=\"675\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-011.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-011-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>In 1946, the all African-American unit was reorganized and federally recognized as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 231st Transportation Corps Truck Battalion and responsible for three truck companies.\u00a0 Aug.\u00a0 19, 1950, the 231st was mobilized to serve in Korea.\u00a0 The 231st was the only Maryland National Guard unit ordered to active duty to support the Korean War.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-086.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-560\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-086.jpg\" alt=\"166-20090530-a-8334h-086\" width=\"675\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-086.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/09\/166-20090530-A-8334H-086-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe are here to honor a truly outstanding Soldier.\u00a0 A Soldier as strong as the steel and blocks that make this building strong.\u00a0 A Soldier who served our country and our state at a time when that dedication and loyalty may not have been fully understood or appreciated by some in our nation.\u00a0 Not all of 1st Sgt. Scott\u2019s battles were on the battlefields of Korea,\u201d said Brig. Gen. James A. They didn\u2019t have someone to look up to, a mentor, or someone who would take time to focus their attention in the right direction, and he would do that. He\u2019d take that time.\u201d Brig. Gen. Many would join the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy. \u201cHe worked hard, but he never brought his work home. When he came home, he came home to me and his family,\u201d said Effie G. Scott was a leader and a mentor to so many.\u00a0 He also followed in the footsteps of great leaders who went before him.\u00a0 He stood in a long line of patriots who from generation to generation passed on the wisdom and skills needed by the young soldiers who followed them,\u201d said Brig. Robert C.
