Originally enlisting into the Army Reserve in 2019, Pettus soon transitioned to the Maryland Army National Guard after initial entry training. While her mother had served in the Army, Pettus was unsure at first of her decision to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was terrified of the military [but] I wanted to go to college,\u201d said Pettus. Joining the Maryland Army National Guard allowed her to explore her career interests while she attained her business degree at Morgan State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pettus said she became interested in administration after her unit\u2019s readiness noncommissioned officer helped her out. \u201cShe [my unit\u2019s administrative leader] goes above and beyond for us [junior enlisted Soldiers]. So that\u2019s something that is very admirable, and something that I would like to be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pandemic ended her civilian employment back in March 2020, claimed the life of her uncle, and infected some of her family members. While the ongoing mission may have interrupted Pettus\u2019s university plan, the cadet appreciates the significance of her role with the COVID-19 testing efforts in Leonardtown, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/03\/50989611347_96fbb136fc_o-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/03\/50989611347_96fbb136fc_o-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/03\/50989611347_96fbb136fc_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/03\/50989611347_96fbb136fc_o-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/03\/50989611347_96fbb136fc_o-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/03\/50989611347_96fbb136fc_o-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt just really hit home for me,\u201d said Pettus. \u201cAnd I feel like if I do have the chance to help, I can [&#8230;] encourage people to get tested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following what the Army has taught her, Pettus is determined to make the most of her situation and is still on track to become a lieutenant in the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor me, it\u2019s [also] a learning experience,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause I know that one day, I\u2019m going to be a leader.
