Typically among the first to arrive at the hangar with fresh coffee in hand, sometimes with an additional cup for a coworker, she checks the flying schedule and begins her day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Bradley, an electrical and environmental specialist, each day at the 175th Wing presents new and unique challenges while repairing the electrical components of the A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft.<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4928 \" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1030-2-2048x1363.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou know, it&#8217;s like a puzzle,\u201d said Bradley. \u201cIt&#8217;s just something different all the time. You find the problem and use your hands and you fix it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a self-proclaimed tomboy who grew up on a tobacco farm in rural North Carolina, Bradley is no stranger to hard work and working with her hands to troubleshoot issues. She was raised by her grandparents and spent time watching her grandfather, who was an electrician, tinker with things. Bradley describes him as a source of inspiration for her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI just always wanted to make him proud,\u201d said Bradley. \u201cI was definitely a papaw\u2019s girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shortly after a brief stint taking college-level electrical courses, she met her husband, Ron, who she moved with to Maryland to help him care for his elderly parents.<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4923 \" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-1536x1097.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201218-Z-UY654-1043-2048x1463.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe was serving as a Marine in North Carolina,\u201d Bradley explains. \u201cHe got out because his parent\u2019s health was failing. So we ended up moving here to Maryland in \u201803. Ron worked and I took care of home. That\u2019s not my gig, but you do what you have to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bradley spent more than a decade acting as a caretaker for her husband\u2019s parents. Following her father-in-law\u2019s passing, her husband suffered a severe injury leaving him unable to work. This led her to pursuing a goal she had put aside long ago &#8211; joining the military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere we were, I mean, we were barely making it,\u201d explains Bradley. \u201c[So now] it was my turn. Despite her fears and hesitations, she explained she found something she didn\u2019t expect to find in her military career &#8211; a second family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was the absolute best thing I&#8217;ve ever done,\u201d said Bradley. \u201cI ended up being Mama Bradley in [basic training]. Right before we would go to bed, when the MTI\u2019s would leave us alone, legit like 6-10 girls would line up because they wanted a mom hug.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190408-Z-UY654-1002-e1609272912826.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4921\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190408-Z-UY654-1002-e1609272912826.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190408-Z-UY654-1002-e1609272912826.jpg 249w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190408-Z-UY654-1002-e1609272912826-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She still keeps in touch with many of her basic training sisters. This sense of family didn\u2019t end at basic training. It wasn\u2019t long before she found a new sense of family at her duty station at the 175th Wing. From comforting her fear of flying during stateside training missions or cracking jokes amongst each other, Bradley\u2019s new coworkers didn\u2019t hesitate to make her feel at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis shop is our family,\u201d describes Bradley. \u201cBut then you go out into that hangar with all those fellows and they&#8217;re just an extension of that family. You end up caring about people in all kinds of different ways. You don&#8217;t get that everywhere you go. They are so good to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the only full-time female airman in her shop, Bradley expressed her initial concerns on feeling like the odd person out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;m hard on myself, but they don&#8217;t require it of me,\u201d explains Bradley. \u201cI push myself really hard, because I know I&#8217;m in a male-dominated field and I want to be better than good.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4929 \" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/201223-Z-UY654-1002-2-2048x1363.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, her concerns were quickly relieved as she found an acceptance she didn\u2019t expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey never make me feel like an outsider, you know, just accepted me,\u201d explains Bradley. \u201cI never wanted special treatment. I just wanted to be accepted and I didn&#8217;t even have to ask. That&#8217;s what they gave me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite her concerns, Bradley\u2019s work ethic and dedication doesn\u2019t go unnoticed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNone of us are perfect, but she definitely knows what she&#8217;s doing,\u201d says Staff Sgt. William Klingenstein, an electrical and environmental specialist <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190416-Z-UY654-1001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4922\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190416-Z-UY654-1001-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190416-Z-UY654-1001-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190416-Z-UY654-1001-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190416-Z-UY654-1001-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/190416-Z-UY654-1001.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>for the 175th Maintenance Squadron. \u201cShe&#8217;s smart. She&#8217;s very dedicated and willing to volunteer for just about anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bradley\u2019s enthusiasm for working hard isn\u2019t the only thing that sets her apart, Klingenstein explains her compassion and willingness to take care of her fellow wingmen makes her an exceptional airman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cShe&#8217;s willing to go out of her way for people because she cares,\u201d said Klingenstein. \u201cFor example, if someone lost a family member, it doesn&#8217;t matter if she knew them or not, she&#8217;s gonna send them flowers or go out of her way to do anything for them. Having someone with a lot of heart like that is pretty hard to come by.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This appreciation is mutual amongst Bradley and her co-workers and contributes to the sense of family within the shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI&#8217;m thankful for the friendship, brutal honesty, acceptance and camaraderie this work family brings to my life,\u201d said Bradley. \u201cMy co-workers constantly challenge me and my abilities and the thing is, they&#8217;re not trying to break me down. Instead, they\u2019re trying to build me up.
