Construction on the site began on April 3, 2020, which is the first of its size in Baltimore City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The purpose of the site is to temporarily relieve local medical facilities in carrying out <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COVID-19 community screenings.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Service Members of the Maryland Army National Guard\u2019s 1297th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and 1729th Maintenance Company, both based in Havre de Grace, Maryland, and the 1229th Transportation Company, based in Baltimore, Maryland, erected Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelters and medium tents in the parking lot outside the race course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3973\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/6161632.jpg 2001w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cCollectively, I\u2019m proud of everybody that\u2019s in the Maryland National Guard,\u201d said Baltimore City Mayor Jack Young who visited the site. \u201cThey came here to help the city of Baltimore by setting up testing sites, to help us with humanitarian efforts, by helping us serve food to our young people and doing all the wonderful things that you do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These service members continue to protect their families and serve their communities by providing additional medical services, transportation, and food distribution support. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the beginning of the COVID-19 activation in Maryland these service members have continued to provide essential services at the request of the civil agencies. As essential employees they leave their families, civil employment, and daily lives to serve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hope that when [my son] gets older, he understands that what I did was to help the community,\u201d Spc. Kiarra Faircloth, a member of the 1297th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, said \u201cAnd it wasn\u2019t a selfish act just to be without his mother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 2,000 Maryland National Guard members are activated to support Maryland\u2019s response to COVID-19. The MDNG is working in close coordination with many agencies to support civil authorities to augment civil agency capabilities.
