Brianna Kearney, 29th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>\u2014<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BALTIMORE (May 15, 2016) &#8212; With the weight of the state on his shoulders, one soldier represented Maryland in the 2016 Region II Best Warrior Competition on May 4-8 at Camp Dawson, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Staff Sgt. Andrew Cullum, a recruiter at the Recruiting and Retention Battalion, competed in the noncommissioned officer category against soldiers from four other states and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>Cullum was the sole competitor for Maryland because recently promoted Sgt. Christopher Hoffman, Maryland\u2019s Soldier of the Year, bowed out to attend Warrant Officer Candidate School to expand his career in aviation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the eggs are in my basket,\u201d Cullum said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic1.jpg\" alt=\"2473-pic1\" width=\"714\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic1.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic1-e1469760040575-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Region II Best Warrior Competition is an intense four-day competition that includes the top soldier and noncommissioned officer from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, D.C., Virginia and West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates go through challenges such as an appearance board, the Army Physical Fitness Test, marksmanship qualification, a 6-mile ruck march, an obstacle course, land navigation and various warrior tasks. These events are meant to test knowledge, problem-solving abilities and physical stamina, with the best of the best in the region striving for the top spot.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of regional competitions go on to the national competition; the winners at the national level go on to compete in the Army-wide competition, said Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Beyard, the senior enlisted leader for the Maryland National Guard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-125 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"2473-pic2\" width=\"312\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic2.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beyard and Command Sgt. Maj. Kim Mendez, the Maryland Army National Guard command sergeant major, both won soldier of the year when they were junior enlisted soldiers and were at the competition to provide moral support for Cullum.<\/p>\n<p>Although Cullum did not win at this level \u2013 an NCO from Pennsylvania and a soldier from West Virginia did \u2013 his involvement in the competition allowed him to prove his soldier abilities as the face of the Maryland Army National Guard. Just participating in the event can have a tremendous positive impact on that soldier\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you go out there and you represent the organization and better yourself, there should be something attached to it that helps you with your career,\u201d Mendez said.<\/p>\n<p>Cullum said that being in the spotlight at these competitions and working so hard to be competitive is something he hopes will motivate others to strive for the same.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic3.jpg\" alt=\"2473-pic3\" width=\"337\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic3.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Hoffman\u2019s case, his hard work \u2013 showcased in the spotlight \u2013 has directly impacted his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompeting in these competitions has helped me progress my leadership and warrior skills,\u201d Hoffman said. \u201cAs far as winning or being competitive for the Best Warrior Competition, it gets you out there. It shows that you worked hard. I think it showed my command that I deserve to get a chance and I don\u2019t think I\u2019m going to let them down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Hoffman\u2019s career progression was more important than participating in the region competition.<\/p>\n<p>Beyard told Hoffman, \u201cI\u2019m sad that you can\u2019t compete, but I\u2019m happy that you\u2019re going to fulfill your career plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cullum said he hopes his experience and his determination will encourage others to step up in the future.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cHopefully, other people will see that and it will motivate them to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-127 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic4.jpg\" alt=\"2473-pic4\" width=\"675\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic4.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/07\/2473-pic4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Spc.
