William Brent and Wilbert Walker were classmates of Lt. Col. Melvin H. Cade, former commanding officer of the Maryland National Guard’s 229th Supply and Transportation Battalion. The 229th carried the lineage and honors of “The Monumental City Guards”, re-designated the First Separate Company in 1882, an all-black Maryland National Guard unit. The unit transformed several times throughout it’s history and became the only Maryland Guard unit to fight in the Korean War, as the 231st Transportation Battalion.
