Col. (Dr.) Eric Allely, Maryland National Guard State Surgeon
Col. (Dr.) Eric Allely, Maryland National Guard State Surgeon, has been appointed Special Safety and Compliance Officer for nursing homes in Maryland by executive order of the Governor. He is a natural fit for this position, having previously spearheaded the Maryland National Guard’s medical assessment support to nursing homes in the state.
Dr. Allely brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Allely has participated or led Defense Department medical planning efforts for major global outbreaks such as H1N1 influenza, Ebola, and Zika virus. He led the readiness and mobilization efforts for the U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps providing medical support in response of major disasters, such as Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
In his new role, Dr. Allely will be supporting the Maryland Department of Health, helping lead the overall effort in assessments, testing, logistics, and related activities. This is yet another facet of the Maryland National Guard’s ongoing support to MDH and other state and local agencies as they respond to the pandemic.
As the Maryland Army National Guard state surgeon, Dr. Allely is a sterling example of the level of expertise to found in the Maryland National Guard. He is an expert medical planner, serving total integration of U.S. Army medical readiness training and requirements for more than 4,500 soldiers assigned to the MDARNG.
Dr. Allely is an expert in Medical Policy and Doctrine, Force Health Protection, Patient Evacuation, Medical Training and Education, Field Medicine, Counter-bioterrorism, and Clinical Decision Support. He has served as a lead medical planner in a variety of senior Department of Defense assignments around the world.
Dr. Allely is a Doctor of Medicine through the University of Colorado School of Health Services, has a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Colorado College, is a certified Aviation Medical Examiner through the Federal Aviation Administration, and completed his residency and fellowship with the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
