Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford and Baltimore City Mayor Bernard Young joined family and friends as they said farewell to the Soldiers in the 729th as they depart for training at Fort Hood, Texas, before leaving for Poland to support the U.S. European Command’s mission there.
“They really did come together and did an incredible job of overcoming the difficulties that we had. Getting to Poland and doing their actual job, that will be where the unit will really shine,” said 1st Lt. Adrian Quinonez, 729th Company executive officer. “Our primary muscle movement will be [supply] operations for NATO operations in Europe.”
Although the ceremony took place at the historic Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore, the unit is stationed at the BG Thomas B. Baker Readiness Center in Ellicott City, Maryland. The 729th first gained federal recognition in the Maryland National Guard on Sept. 30, 1921, initially as a medical regiment before transforming into a support company. Soldiers of the 729th last activated in 2017 to assist Puerto Rico in the response and relief efforts following Hurricane Maria.
Since April 2014, Operation Atlantic Resolve leads efforts to build readiness, increase interoperability and enhance the bond between ally and partner militaries through multinational missions.
“They are really part of a shield against tyranny,” said Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford highlighting the importance of the United States’ footprint in Europe to deter potential adversaries. “I am very honored to be here for this deployment ceremony and all of us Marylanders are very proud.”
There are approximately 6,000 Soldiers participating in Atlantic Resolve at any given time, conducting operations and exercises across 17 countries.[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”View photo gallery from exercise” css=”.vc_custom_1526040459743{margin-top: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 5px !important;border-top-width: 5px !important;border-bottom-width: 5px !important;padding-top: 5px !important;padding-bottom: 5px !important;}”][vc_raw_html css=”.vc_custom_1577570638887{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}”]JTNDYSUyMGRhdGEtZmxpY2tyLWVtYmVkJTNEJTIydHJ1ZSUyMiUyMGRhdGEtZm9vdGVyJTNEJTIydHJ1ZSUyMiUyMGhyZWYlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy5mbGlja3IuY29tJTJGcGhvdG9zJTJGbWRuZyUyRmFsYnVtcyUyRjcyMTU3NzEyNDAzMDIyNDY3JTIyJTIwdGl0bGUlM0QlMjI3Mjl0aCUyMFFNJTIwQ29tcG9zaXRlJTIwU3VwcGx5JTIwQ28uJTIwUG9sYW5kJTIwRGVwbG95bWVudCUyMiUzRSUzQ2ltZyUyMHNyYyUzRCUyMmh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGbGl2ZS5zdGF0aWNmbGlja3IuY29tJTJGNjU1MzUlMkY0OTI4OTU4NzM5N19hY2U0ZDQ2NzgyX3ouanBnJTIyJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjI2NDAlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjI0MjclMjIlMjBhbHQlM0QlMjI3Mjl0aCUyMFFNJTIwQ29tcG9zaXRlJTIwU3VwcGx5JTIwQ28uJTIwUG9sYW5kJTIwRGVwbG95bWVudCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRmElM0UlM0NzY3JpcHQlMjBhc3luYyUyMHNyYyUzRCUyMiUyRiUyRmVtYmVkci5mbGlja3IuY29tJTJGYXNzZXRzJTJGY2xpZW50LWNvZGUuanMlMjIlMjBjaGFyc2V0JTNEJTIydXRmLTglMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZzY3JpcHQlM0U=[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]
