(Berlin, MD) \u2013 Lt. Governor Aruna K. Miller participated in the ribbon cutting yesterday for the new Maryland State Police Barrack \u2018V\u2019 in Berlin and was joined by Maryland Department of State Police Secretary Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., and Department of General Services Secretary Atif T. Chaudhry.

“Today\u00a0<\/span>we stand in a new\u00a0<\/span>facility that is\u00a0<\/span>built for the future,\u00a0<\/span>designed with\u00a0<\/span>state-of-the-art technology, and\u00a0<\/span>complete with a new\u00a0<\/span>forensic science laboratory and\u00a0<\/span>a dedicated garage,”\u00a0said Lt. Governor Aruna K. Miller.\u00a0“<\/span>This building isn\u2019t just\u00a0<\/span>bricks and mortar\u2014t<\/span>he New Barrack V\u00a0<\/span>stands as a commitment\u00a0<\/span>from the Moore\u2013Miller Administration\u00a0<\/span>that no matter where you live\u2014<\/span>west of the Bay,\u00a0<\/span>east of the Bay, or\u00a0<\/span>right here in Berlin\u2014your\u00a0<\/span>safety matters<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It is\u00a0a promise kept;\u00a0<\/span>to give our State Police\u00a0<\/span>the tools they need s<\/span>o they can do their jobs\u00a0<\/span>with excellence.”<\/span>

In April 2023, the Maryland Department of General Services and Maryland State Police broke ground on the new 30,000 square foot Berlin Barrack and Forensic Sciences Division-Berlin, which is visible from US Route 50 in Worcester County. This project incorporates best practices in public safety design and resolves many deficiencies of the old barrack and crime laboratory location. The new barrack which includes a 4,940 square foot garage will house civilian and sworn personnel from the Field Operations Bureau and the Criminal Enforcement Division along with personnel from the Forensic Sciences Division.

\u201cThe new state-of-the-art police barrack and\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>xpanded\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Forensic Sciences Division-Berlin\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>quips<\/span><\/span>\u00a0our civilian personnel, forensic scientists and our Maryland State Troopers\u00a0<\/span>with more advanced capabilities and modern technology<\/span><\/span>,\u201d said Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr.\u00a0 \u201cWith 21<\/span>st<\/sup>\u00a0century enhancements, our dedicated employees will continue to deliver the highest quality law\u00a0enforcement services available while working in coordination with\u00a0<\/span>the Worcester County Sheriff\u2019s Office, the Berlin Police Department and\u00a0<\/span>all of our allied<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>law enforcement partners throughout the Eastern Shore<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

“This facility features a cutting-edge police barrack and forensic laboratory, reflecting this administration’s continued commitment to supporting the dedicated men and women of the Maryland State Police with the modern tools they need to protect and serve our communities,” said Maryland Department of General Services Secretary Atif Chaudhry. “This barrack is more than just a structure \u2014 it stands as a symbol of our investment in the people of the Eastern Shore. Over the past two years, our department has worked closely with the Maryland State Police to design and build a 21st-century facility that will support this region for generations to come.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The new barrack design is in compliance with the International Green Construction Code to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability goals as outlined by the Department of General Services. The building is equipped with LED lighting and occupancy sensors as well as an efficient variable refrigerant volume HVAC system with dedicated outdoor air supply units, which incorporate heat recovery systems. Utilization of natural gas equipment is kept to a minimum. The project also provides two EV charging stations for state operated vehicles. The barrack, laboratory, and garage are ADA compliant. <\/span><\/p>\n

The general contractor for the project was\u00a0Keller Brothers from Mount Airy, Maryland. Their construction team includes subcontractors from the Eastern Shore including Hancock & Sons for mechanical and plumbing work and Lywood Electric for electrical work. Other major work was accomplished within the State\u2019s 30% Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and 10% veteran participation goals. The design team was Manns Woodward Studios, a White<\/span> Marsh-based architectural firm well-versed in public safety architecture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of General Services is responsible for essential services and programs administered on behalf of the state, including but not limited to procuring goods and services; designing, building, leasing, managing and maintaining facilities; leading energy conservation efforts; administering the state\u2019s Capital Grants Program; and providing essential services such as inventory control, disposition of surplus property and records management. The Department of General Services Maryland Capitol Police maintains safety and security with statewide jurisdiction in state-owned buildings, state leased facilities, and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
