{"id":24193,"date":"2022-03-15T09:05:02","date_gmt":"2022-03-15T13:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/?p=24193"},"modified":"2022-03-15T10:03:17","modified_gmt":"2022-03-15T14:03:17","slug":"maryland-state-police-to-increase-patrols-as-st-patricks-day-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/2022\/03\/15\/maryland-state-police-to-increase-patrols-as-st-patricks-day-nears\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland State Police To Increase Patrols As St. Patrick&#8217;s Day Nears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(PIKESVILLE, Md.) \u2014 With St. Patrick\u2019s Day coming up on Thursday, Maryland State Police are urging those who plan to celebrate with alcohol to be safe and smart and avoid impaired, distracted and aggressive driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an increase in impaired drivers expected throughout the state this week, state police will be conducting saturation patrols at each of the 23 barracks focusing on impaired, aggressive and distracted driving. Enforcement will be bolstered by impaired driving saturation patrol funds from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration\u2019s Highway Safety Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiatives, which will take place on various days through March 20, include saturation patrols in areas known to have a higher number of DUI crashes or arrests. These efforts in many cases will include partnering with allied law enforcement and other state agencies to both enforce the law and offer outreach to the community through social media and electronic billboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those initiatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Maryland State Police North East Barrack will be targeting drug-related impaired driving along Route 40 in Cecil County.<\/li><li>The MSP Salisbury and Berlin Barracks will be working with allied agencies throughout Wicomico County and the lower Eastern Shore as part of the area\u2019s \u201cBorder to Border\u201d unity enforcement effort. <\/li><li>The Forestville Barrack will be conducting high visibility enforcement initiatives targeting speeding, distracted driving and seatbelt violators.<\/li><li>Troopers from the Bel Air Barrack will be working with the Harford County Traffic Task Force to saturate the Bel Air area, with High Visibility Enforcement on state routes around Bel Air.<\/li><li>In Western Maryland, troopers from the Cumberland Barrack will focus manpower on DUI enforcement through the weekend, with an emphasis on previously identified high crash and impaired driving areas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Maryland Department of Transportation 120 people died on Maryland\u2019s roads from impaired driving crashes in 2020. Impaired drivers injured more than 2,600 in 2020.
