{"id":18927,"date":"2020-07-26T12:33:33","date_gmt":"2020-07-26T16:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/?p=18927"},"modified":"2020-07-26T15:05:11","modified_gmt":"2020-07-26T19:05:11","slug":"driver-charged-in-crash-that-killed-two-in-prince-georges-co","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/2020\/07\/26\/driver-charged-in-crash-that-killed-two-in-prince-georges-co\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver Charged In Crash That Killed Two In Prince George&#8217;s Co."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(UPPER MARLBORO, MD) \u2013 After consultation with the Prince George\u2019s County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s Office, Maryland State Police have charged a driver in connection with yesterday\u2019s crash that killed two people on Crain Highway.<\/p>\n<p>The driver charged is identified as Mark D. Austin, 35, of Brandywine, Md.\u00a0 He is currently charged with two counts each of motor vehicle manslaughter and criminally negligent manslaughter.\u00a0 While not immediately reporting any injury following the crash, Austin was later transported to MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center after complaining of discomfort.\u00a0 Following an examination at the hospital, he was transported to the Prince George\u2019s County Central Booking Center for processing and an initial appearance before a court commissioner.\u00a0 During his initial appearance, he was ordered held without bond in the county detention center.<\/p>\n<p>The deceased are identified as Michael Hethmon, 66, of the 8100-block of Croom Road, Upper Marlboro, Md., and a 49-year-old woman, also from Upper Marlboro.\u00a0 Her name is being withheld, pending the location and notification of family.\u00a0 Both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene by members of the Prince George\u2019s County Fire Department.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after 12:30 p.m. yesterday, troopers from the Forestville Barrack responded to a call for a two vehicle crash on northbound Crain Highway at Croom Station Road in Upper Marlboro.\u00a0 The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded and assumed the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary investigation indicates Austin was driving a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup northbound on Crain Highway approaching Croom Station Road when he failed to stop for a red traffic signal.\u00a0 The Ford pickup drove into the intersection and struck a 2016 Subaru Legacy driven by the female victim, who was making a left turn onto Croom Station Road from southbound Crain Highway.<\/p>\n<p>According to the preliminary investigation, the pickup struck the car in the passenger side door.\u00a0 The force of the crash caused the car to rotate and strike the guardrail.\u00a0 The pickup also rotated, overturned on its roof, and caught fire.\u00a0 There were no reported injuries to Austin from the fire.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary investigation indicates speed, failure to obey a traffic control device and driver impairment were all factors in this crash.\u00a0 Based on consultation with the state\u2019s attorney\u2019s office, additional charges are possible, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.\u00a0 A detailed crash reconstruction will be completed by the Maryland State Police Crash Team and presented to the Prince George\u2019s County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s Office for review.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the significant scene and fatalities involved, the northbound and southbound lanes of Crain Highway were closed in the area of the intersection with Croom Station Road.\u00a0 Traffic was detoured around the scene by MDOT State Highway Administration personnel.\u00a0 The roadway was reopened about 7:00 p.m. yesterday.\u00a0 Additional on-scene assistance was provided by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Prince George\u2019s County Fire Department.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation is continuing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CONTACT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Office of Media Communications \u2013 msp.media@maryland.gov<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18936\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/07\/Mark-Austin-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mark Austin<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(UPPER MARLBORO, MD) \u2013 After consultation with the Prince George\u2019s County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s Office, Maryland State Police have charged a driver in connection with yesterday\u2019s crash that killed two people on Crain Highway.
