{"id":17265,"date":"2020-03-03T23:30:32","date_gmt":"2020-03-04T04:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/?p=17265"},"modified":"2020-03-03T23:30:32","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T04:30:32","slug":"one-dead-after-apparent-hit-run-victim-pursues-suspect-in-anne-arundel-co","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msp\/2020\/03\/03\/one-dead-after-apparent-hit-run-victim-pursues-suspect-in-anne-arundel-co\/","title":{"rendered":"One Dead After Apparent Hit\/Run Victim Pursues Suspect In Anne Arundel Co."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(GLEN BURNIE, MD) &#8212; Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash that may have occurred after the suspect in a hit and run crash attempted to elude the victim who was pursuing him in Anne Arundel County this evening.<\/p>\n<p>The deceased victim is an adult male who is not being identified until family can be notified.<\/p>\n<p>According to the preliminary investigation, shortly before 4:30 p.m. today, multiple 911 callers to the Glen Burnie Barracks reported two vehicles had been involved in a hit and run collision and were now traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on I-97 between I-695 and Rt. 100.\u00a0 The barrack broadcast a lookout for a Chevrolet Silverado and a Honda Civic.<\/p>\n<p>Moments later, a trooper who had just completed a traffic stop was sitting in \u00a0traffic on the ramp from westbound Rt. 100 to Rt. 170 when he saw those two vehicles pass him at a high rate of speed.\u00a0 The vehicles appeared to be chasing each other.\u00a0 The trooper saw the Chevrolet Silverado pickup cross the grass median and travel into oncoming traffic.\u00a0 The pickup then drove back onto the right side of the road and accelerated away at a high rate of speed, still followed by the Honda Civic.<\/p>\n<p>The trooper activated his lights and siren, attempting to clear traffic out of his way, but was unable to get close to the Chevrolet Silverado because of the high rate of speed and because the Honda Civic continued to pursue the pickup.\u00a0 \u00a0From a distance behind, the trooper saw the two vehicles turn onto eastbound Rt. 176.\u00a0 The trooper slowed for traffic at the intersection of Rt. 170 and Rt. 176.\u00a0 The trooper continued in the direction the two vehicles had traveled in and came upon a crash scene at Rt. 176 and Old Telegraph Road involving the Chevrolet Silverado, which had struck a utility pole and overturned.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency medical services personnel were requested to respond.\u00a0 The driver of the pickup was transported by EMS personnel to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.\u00a0 He was pronounced deceased later this evening.<\/p>\n<p>The driver of the Honda Civic told investigating troopers the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado struck his vehicle and did not stop.\u00a0 He said he drove after the pickup in an attempt to obtain a tag number.\u00a0 Troopers did observe what was described as minor damage to his vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded to conduct the investigation, which has continued throughout the evening. A member of the Anne Arundel County State&#8217;s Attorney&#8217;s Office responded to the scene and was briefed by investigators.<\/p>\n<p>MDOT State Highway Administration CHART personnel assisted with lane closures and maintaining a detour around the scene while the investigation was conducted and debris was cleared.\u00a0 Anne Arundel County Police officers assisted at the scene.\u00a0 BGE responded to the scene to repair\/replace the utility pole and the downed wires.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation is continuing.\u00a0 Additional information will be provided as the investigation progresses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(GLEN BURNIE, MD) &#8212; Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash that may have occurred after the suspect in a hit and run crash attempted to elude the victim who was pursuing him in Anne Arundel County this evening.
