(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Sunday linked to street racing in Baltimore County.

The deceased is Leo Anthony Brooks Jr., 56, of Reisterstown, Maryland. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical services personnel. According to a preliminary investigation, Brooks was the driver of a 2017 Mercedes believed to be engaged in a street race with an unidentified vehicle.

Troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack responded to the crash at about 4:50 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 795 North and McDonogh Road in Owings Mills, Maryland. Investigators suspect Brooks lost control of the vehicle while speeding and struck a 2006 Jeep Liberty on northbound I-795. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration responded to assist with road closures. The Baltimore County Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The deadly crash is a reminder of the dangers of speeding and aggressive driving. According to the MDOT MVA’s Maryland Highway Safety Office, an average of 84 people died and nearly 5,600 others were injured on Maryland roads between 2018 and 2022 due to speeding or aggressive driving. Maryland State Police implore motorists to obey the speed limit, avoid aggressive, distracted, impaired driving and please buckle up.
