Maryland State Police Continues Investigation Into Motorcycle Theft Connecting Frederick, Harford Counties

(EDGEWOOD, MD) – Maryland State Police recently recovered a stolen motorcycle in Harford County, providing investigators a lead into an ongoing investigation into a larger burglary of a motorcycle shop in Frederick County.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division – Firearms Enforcement Unit arrested a 19-year-old man Wednesday for theft of an item valued between $1,500 and $25,000 and unlawful taking in connection with the possession of the motorcycle. He was then transported to the Bel Air Barrack for processing. Charges are pending in this case. Additional charges could be filed in the coming weeks as additional suspects are identified.

According to a preliminary investigation, troopers conducted a traffic stop at about 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday on the 1700 block of Pulaski Highway in Edgewood, Maryland. A check of the motorcycle’s vehicle identification number revealed that it had been stolen last year. Investigators believe that the person who was caught with the motorcycle had recently obtained it in a trade for another motorcycle and was not involved in the initial theft, but can still be charged with possession of stolen property.

Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle recovered at the traffic stop was one of eight stolen on Sept. 19, 2019 from Dutrow’s Honda Sales and Service in Frederick, Maryland. It represents the first of the vehicles to be recovered. The motorcycles stolen were similar to the one pictured below and were valued at more than $2,200 each.

This case highlights the state police goal of helping to prevent and investigate multi-jurisdictional crime while supporting allied law enforcement agencies across Maryland. It is also a reminder for consumers to be careful with whom they purchase and/or trade items with. Possession of stolen material can be considered a felony. According to Maryland law, a person convicted of theft of property with a value of $1,500 to less than $25,000 could face five years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.

The Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division – Firearms Enforcement Unit consists of sworn troopers who are tasked with working throughout the state to identify, infiltrate and dismantle firearm-related violence. The unit is among one of many state agencies committed to combating violent crime in Maryland.
