Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Crash in Howard County

(ELLICOTT CITY, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning in Howard County.

The victim is identified as Fred Eromosele Ehimen, 49, of Columbia, Maryland. Ehimen was the driver and sole occupant of a Toyota Camry involved in the crash. Ehimen was pronounced deceased on the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Waterloo Barrack responded to the area of the ramp from westbound Interstate 70 to southbound U.S. 29 in Ellicott City for reports of a motor vehicle crash. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2013 Ford Explorer, driven by a 17-year-old man from Baltimore, was traveling the wrong direction on the I-70 ramp when it struck the Toyota Camry head on, operated by Ehiman.

The 17-year-old was flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center by MSP Aviation Command. Two additional passengers in the Explorer, a 13-year-old and 16-year-old, were transported to local hospitals by ambulance.

Through the continued investigation it was revealed that prior to the crash, Frederick County Sheriff’s Deputies determined the Explorer was stolen which subsequently led to a pursuit involving the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and Howard County Police Department. The pursuit had been terminated for several miles prior to the crash.

Personnel from the Howard County Police Department and Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with the road closure.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. Charges are pending consultation with the Office of the State’s Attorney for Howard County. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
