UPDATE: State Police Continue Investigation Into Crash Involving Transport Of Nine Prisoners
(Baltimore, MD) – State police continue to investigate the crash involving a van transporting nine prisoners this morning.
The driver of the van is identified as Shawn Mears, 44, of Tennessee. Mears, a correctional officer, was operating a private prisoner transport van from Tennessee. He is charged with failure to control vehicle.
The investigation indicates the driver of the van, later identified as Mears, rear ended a Nissan Altima on southbound I-95 at the 63.9 mile marker at 8:00 a.m. in Baltimore today. The driver of the Nissan Altima was transported by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.
Seven of the prisoners were transported by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. The other two prisoners were transported by ambulance to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. All nine prisoners remain under police watch.
The two correctional officers in the van, including Mears, were uninjured and responded to both hospitals to guard the prisoners while they received medical treatment for injuries sustained in the incident. State troopers from the JFK Memorial Highway Barrack were also deployed to both hospitals to assist with the prisoner watch.
