Three Killed In Washington Co. Crash
(WILLIAMSPORT, MD) — Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into a two-vehicle crash last night in Washington County that took the lives of three people and injured a fourth.
The deceased victims are identified as Charles E. Canfield, 73, Carmen L. Canfield, 72, and Vonda L. Jamison, 82, all of whom were from Sharpsburg, Md. They were traveling together in a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by Charles Canfield. All three were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by emergency medical services personnel.
The injured victim is identified as Robert L. Wilt, Sr., 78, of Hagerstown, Md. He was the driver and sole occupant of a 2015 Kia Rio. Wilt was injured and transported by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center.
Shortly before 7:00 p.m. yesterday, troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to the report of a traffic crash on Greencastle Pike (Rt. 63) south of Findley Mill Road. Responding troopers and fire/EMS personnel, found two vehicles involved in the crash. The Mitsubishi was overturned and the occupants required extrication by emergency rescue personnel. The Maryland State Police Crash Team was called to respond and conduct the investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates the Mitsubishi, driven by Charles Canfield, was southbound on Greencastle Pike, south of Findley Mill Road and the Kia driven by Robert Wilt was northbound, when Canfield attempted to make a U-turn in the travel portion of the road. The northbound Kia struck the left side of the turning Mitsubishi, causing it to overturn. The Kia then traveled off the roadway onto the grassy area on the right side of the road.
Due to the fatalities and the extensive crash scene, troopers had to close the roadway in the area of the scene for about five hours. MDOT State Highway Administration CHART personnel responded and set up a detour around the scene. A member of the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and was briefed by investigators.
The investigation is continuing.
