Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash In Anne Arundel County
(GLEN BURNIE, Md.) — Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early Thursday morning in Anne Arundel County.
At about 5:45 a.m., troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack responded on a report of a pedestrian being struck on southbound MD 295 north of I-195. According to a preliminary investigation, the victim, identified as Hugh Anthony Clarke, 44, of Brooklyn, Md. was driving a Honda Pilot when for unknown reasons his vehicle left the roadway and struck a cable barrier in the median. Shortly afterward Clarke exited his vehicle and was walking in the left lane of the roadway when he was struck by a Penske truck.
The driver of the truck, Walter John Riehl Jr., 56, of Pennsylvania, remained at the scene. According to a preliminary investigation, Riehl attempted to swerve and avoid Clarke, but he was clipped by the passenger-side mirror of the truck. Clarke was transported by ambulance to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he was declared deceased.
Drugs, alcohol and speeding are not considered to be factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
