{"id":88089,"date":"2025-03-31T13:22:46","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T17:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=88089"},"modified":"2025-03-31T14:10:03","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T18:10:03","slug":"math-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/math-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Selects Finalists for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">MEDIA CONTACT:<br>Raven Hill, 410-767-0486<br><a href=\"mailto:raven.hill@maryland.gov\">raven.hill@maryland.gov<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Maryland Selects Finalists for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>PAEMST awards are the nation\u2019s highest honor for math and science educators.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>BALTIMORE (March 31, 2025) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Today, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) announced six finalists for the 2025 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the nation\u2019s highest award for teaching in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Established by Congress in 1983, the award recognizes individual achievement, student progress in STEM and\/or computer science, and the highest standards of STEM teaching. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, a national committee of mathematicians, scientists, education researchers, district-level personnel, and teachers recommends up to 108 seventh through 12th grade teachers to receive PAEMST awards. Up to two teachers\u2014mathematics or science\u2014from each state will receive the award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is an honor to recognize Maryland&#8217;s six finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching,\u201d said <\/span><b>Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThese educators exemplify the vital role that STEAM education plays in shaping the future of our students. By fostering innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, they inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s science finalists are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>John Moyer III \u2013 Caroline County Public Schools, North Caroline High School\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jacquelyn Southerland \u2013 Prince George\u2019s County Public Schools, Accokeek Academy<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lauren Stevens \u2013 Carroll County Public Schools, Manchester Valley High School<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mathematics finalists are:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Timothy Carter \u2013 Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Joshua Massey \u2013 Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Matthew Rinehart \u2014 Washington County Public Schools, Northern Middle School\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award recognizes teachers who have both deep content knowledge and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honorees will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and all-expenses paid trip for an award ceremony.
