Wright Starts Full Term as State Superintendent of Schools<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i>Improved literacy outcomes, better accountability models and implementing the Blueprint are top priorities<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>BALTIMORE (July 1, 2024) \u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Today, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marylandpublicschools.org\/about\/Pages\/OS\/wright.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Carey M. Wright<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> begins a four-year term as State Superintendent of Schools, a full circle moment for the Maryland born, raised and trained education leader. Dr. Wright, a former Mississippi State Superintendent of Education who previously served as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/PressRelease-CareyWright-InterimStateSuperintendent10.04.2023.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interim Maryland State Superintendent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was appointed by the Maryland State Board of Education in April to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/board-wright-state-superintendent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">full term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Wright\u2019s strategic priorities include improving student outcomes in collaboration with local school systems, leaders and educators; aligning statewide literacy instruction to the Science of Reading; enhancing assessment and accountability models; and seizing the potential of the landmark <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blueprint for Maryland\u2019s Future<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> legislation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is a golden moment in public education that calls for transformational change with all boats rowing in the same direction,\u201d <\/span><b>said Dr. Wright<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cFrom the highest levels of state government to our local school systems, we are all guided by our north star of improving student outcomes and working with teachers and leaders to make that happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Carey Wright is the rare leader to deliver transformative educational opportunities and outcomes for 900,000 children,\u201d said <b>State Board President Clarence Crawford<\/b>. \u201cMaryland has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to impact lives and futures. We are excited by Dr. Wright\u2019s results-driven leadership, innovative ideas and collaborative approach to improving education in our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the longest-serving State Superintendent in Mississippi history, Dr. Wright led<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the implementation of successful literacy reforms that resulted in unprecedented student achievement gains, known colloquially as the \u201cMississippi Miracle.\u201d Dr. Wright was appointed Interim Maryland State Superintendent last October. Under her leadership, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) successfully managed a transition of superintendent administrations, worked in concert with the State Board to take significant actions necessary towards improved math and literacy rates, and built foundational relationships with key stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Wright has implemented a strategic agenda grounded in the Science of Reading. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In January, the State Board set an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/board-science-of-reading\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aspirational target<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for Maryland to be among the top 10 states for literacy instruction by 2027<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MSDE has also launched a $6.85 million, four-year philanthropic partnership with the nonprofit Ibis Group to increase literacy outcomes statewide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prioritizing collaboration and open dialogue, she organized the Assessment and Accountability Task Force earlier this year to strengthen the correlation between school ratings and student academic performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have the momentum to make changes across Maryland,\u201d said <\/span><b>Dr. Wright<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cand elevate public education for every child in every school and classroom.\u202f\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>At a Glance: Dr. Carey M.
