A new generation of Maryland school leaders is converging on Annapolis next week for Maryland\u2019s second Promising Principals Academy.<\/p>\n

The Academy, a unique effort by the Maryland State Department of Education to prepare a new cadre of principals, is building on the success of its first year.\u00a0 Research has repeatedly shown that an effective principal is the key to a successful school.<\/p>\n

More than a dozen educators included in the Promising Principals Academy\u2019s initial cohort have already been promoted.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaryland public school success is built on the foundation of strong school leadership,\u201d said Maryland State Superintendent Lillian M. Lowery.\u00a0 \u201cThis outstanding program provides training and year-round mentoring to support these women and men who are entering leadership roles.\u00a0 Our students are the beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two participants from 23 of Maryland\u2019s 24 local school systems — plus one participant from Kent County and another from the statewide SEED School — are involved in this year\u2019s class.\u00a0 Participants were nominated by their local superintendent based on their leadership potential, interest, and current position.\u00a0 This summer conference\u2014aligned to principal evaluation standards\u2014marks the first time this cohort of promising principals has gathered as a whole. The group will hold four more convenings throughout the year, as well as online\/digital coaching sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
