Hampden Elementary\/Middle School in Baltimore City today will get a new look, thanks to the volunteer efforts of a local artist, Maryland State Department of Education staff members, and children at the school.<\/p>\n

MSDE\u2019s Division of Special Education\/Early Intervention Services, led by Assistant State Superintendent Marcella Franczkowski, along with artist Tyler Hudock of WeMural, is creating a mural for the school.\u00a0 It will depict three friends — a Mustang (the school\u2019s mascot), an Oriole, and a Raven, happily eating lunch together.<\/p>\n

Students will take part in the project, helping MSDE staff paint the mural as it is projected on the wall.\u00a0 Principal Khaleel Desaque embraced the project on behalf of all of his students, including those with disabilities who receive special education services at the school.<\/p>\n

The mural painting project is part of Governor Hogan\u2019s \u201cMaryland Unites\u201d program.\u00a0 The “Day of Service” initiative is an opportunity for state employees to offer their time and talents to benefit our citizens through community service. State employees will receive four hours of paid leave if they choose to participate and have the option to take part in the agency event or a volunteer activity of their choice.<\/p>\n
