{"id":5952,"date":"2017-09-29T12:34:55","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T16:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=5952"},"modified":"2017-09-29T12:34:55","modified_gmt":"2017-09-29T16:34:55","slug":"maryland-state-department-of-education-awarded-17-2-million-for-charter-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/maryland-state-department-of-education-awarded-17-2-million-for-charter-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland State Department of Education Awarded $17.2 Million for Charter Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Funding Via Five-Year Federal Grant <\/h3>\n<p>BALTIMORE \u2013 The Maryland State Department of Education has been awarded a five-year, $17.2 million federal grant to help both new and existing charter schools.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the Expanding Opportunity Through Quality Charter Schools Grants to State Entities Program, the new grant will allow MSDE to award sub-grants, provide technical assistance and disseminate best practices and performance data for both new and current schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that every child in Maryland deserves access to a world-class education regardless of what neighborhood they happen to grow up in,&#8221; said Governor Larry Hogan. &#8220;These grants will help provide choices for public charter schools for Maryland families and give additional opportunities for our students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, said that MSDE stands ready to put the funding to good use.  \u201cWe are excited about the opportunities that this grant will afford students in Maryland,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>MSDE will receive $5.5 million this year as the competitive grant\u2019s first installment.
