{"id":594,"date":"2015-07-10T14:32:05","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T18:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=594"},"modified":"2015-07-10T14:33:53","modified_gmt":"2015-07-10T18:33:53","slug":"positivity-is-the-key-encouraging-parental-involvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/positivity-is-the-key-encouraging-parental-involvement\/","title":{"rendered":"TOY Stories Blog: Positivity is the Key &#8211; Encouraging Parental Involvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/Hogan4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-595\" src=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/Hogan4.jpg\" alt=\"Hogan4\" width=\"190\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Jodie Hogan<\/p>\n<p>What is the first thing on my to-do list on Friday mornings?\u00a0 You guessed it!\u00a0 It is to make one positive phone call home every week.\u00a0 I started this initiative at South River High School two years ago.\u00a0 I was frustrated with myself because I always had good intentions to make consistent positive connections with my parents, but I was not following through.\u00a0 Our initiative is called, \u201cFabulous Seahawk Fridays.\u201d\u00a0 I created a spreadsheet to record the names of each parent I called, and shared it with my colleagues.\u00a0 I told them that if every faculty member made a positive call once a week, we would brighten the day of approximately 4,800 students and their parents throughout the course of the year.\u00a0 That was a powerful number, so many of the faculty jumped on board right away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The response from the parents was incredible.\u00a0 So many of them only hear from teachers for negative reasons.\u00a0 If they have \u201cgood\u201d children, they may not hear anything at all.\u00a0 Every parent I have called in the past two years has been thankful to hear how their child contributes to the class.\u00a0 Many of them will share how encouraged they were to receive a positive phone call.\u00a0 As we all know, being a parent of a teenager is often a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More important, the response from the students has been wonderful.\u00a0 These phone calls empower them to continue to do well.\u00a0 It lets them know that I see them and that they matter.\u00a0 I had a student tell me, \u201cMy mom took me to <em>Taco Bell<\/em> last night because you called.\u201d\u00a0 A colleague of mine had a student tell her, \u201cMy dad let me use the car yesterday.\u00a0 Thank you for calling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This simple initiative has opened the doors to our school.\u00a0 Many of the parents we talk to are not involved in school activities.\u00a0 Our hope is that they will be encouraged to come to an event if they have had a positive contact with our faculty members.\u00a0 In addition, it has put a positive light on what we do, when parents tell other parents that they received a positive call.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Parent involvement does not have to be complicated.\u00a0 We want our parents to be informed about the Common Core standards and the PARCC assessments.\u00a0 Community days, parent nights, and PTSO meetings are excellent sources to educate our parents about education reform.\u00a0 However, a simple phone call helps build the foundation for receptiveness and ultimately success at these events.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Jodie served as the 2013-2014 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.
