BALTIMORE \u2013 Governor Larry Hogan today praised the continued success of Maryland high schools, ranked for the third straight year as the best in the nation by US News & World Report.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaryland has some of the best schools in the nation and our administration remains committed to ensuring that all of our students have access to a world-class education,\u201d Governor Hogan. \u201cI would like to congratulate the students, teachers, and parents who helped Maryland earn this well-deserved recognition.\u201d <\/p>\n
Governor Hogan\u2019s budget for Fiscal Year 2018 includes record funding for Maryland public schools for the third year in a row. In addition, the Governor has touted innovative training programs, such as the Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools (P-TECH), which offer partnership programs that allow students to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). <\/p>\n
\u201cMaryland education has never rested on its laurels, but is constantly innovating to better serve our evolving and growing student body,\u201d said Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools. \u201cEach one of our 24 school systems — and their educators — is hard at work to improve instruction and produce graduates that are ready for postsecondary education or the job market. Our students are meeting that challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n
US News, in data published this week, found that Maryland has a higher percentage of top-ranked high schools than any other state in the nation. US News first ranked Maryland high schools at the head of the class in 2015.<\/p>\n
US News ranked 2,600 high schools across the nation on State assessments, the performance on those tests of student subgroups often considered disadvantaged, graduation rates, and Advanced Placement data. Maryland high schools on average performed better than those in any other State, with 5.9 percent achieving what the publication termed \u201cGold Medal\u201d status and 21.6 percent achieving the Silver Medal.<\/p>\n
