{"id":44163,"date":"2020-09-18T17:23:05","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T21:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=44163"},"modified":"2020-09-18T17:23:05","modified_gmt":"2020-09-18T21:23:05","slug":"maryland-career-technical-students-shine-at-fbla-national-leadership-virtual-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/maryland-career-technical-students-shine-at-fbla-national-leadership-virtual-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Career &amp; Technical Students Shine at FBLA National Leadership Virtual Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Immediate Release:<br \/>\nContact: Lora Rakowski<br \/>\nLora.Rakowski@maryland.gov<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Maryland Career &amp; Technical Students Shine at FBLA National Leadership Virtual Competition<\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Record Number of Maryland Competitors Finish in National Top Ten<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BALTIMORE<\/strong> <strong>\u00a0(<\/strong><strong>September 18<\/strong><strong>, 20<\/strong><strong>20<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> \u2013 Maryland\u2019s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) delegation brought home 26 medals from the National Leadership Online Experience (NLE) earlier this summer, given the cancellation of the in-person conference in Salt Lake City, Utah due to the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0 A team of the state\u2019s most talented Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school students showcased their skills in 72 CTE competitive events. Demonstrating exemplary CTE training, Maryland students challenged 8,378 other student champions from 46 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and several international competitors as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Maryland, we are committed to pairing academic knowledge and technical skills in order to\u00a0 empower our students for in-demand, high-skilled, and high-wages careers, and FBLA is an integral part of the State\u2019s Career and Technical Education program,\u201d said Karen B. Salmon, Ph.D., State Superintendent of Schools.\u00a0 \u201cFrom sports &amp; entertainment management to accounting and information systems, Maryland\u2019s talented FBLA students continue to excel and stand out among their peers in this annual national showcase. Congratulations to all of our student participants and dedicated educators; thank you for making us Maryland proud!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FBLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that prepares students for careers in business and assists them to\u00a0become better prepared for the world of work.\u00a0FBLA helps students develop leadership abilities, prepares them for entry into business-related occupations, and offers a setting where members compete at regional, state and national levels in business and technology curriculum.\u00a0 Maryland FBLA has a statewide membership of 3,600 middle and high school students. Members have consistently demonstrated their expertise and professionalism while participating throughout the year in a variety of leadership and competitive conferences as well as community service projects.<\/p>\n<p>The following students placed in the top 10 during the national competition:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Maryland FBLA National Top Ten \u2013 2020 National Leadership Experience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Place <\/strong>in Broadcast Journalism:\u00a0 Emily Lim, Julie Lawler, Keya Shah, Marriotts Ridge High School<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Place<\/strong> in Entrepreneurship:\u00a0 Ellen Li, Lynzee Louden, Mount Hebron High School<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Place<\/strong> in Management Information Systems:\u00a0 Adi Gupta, Love Patel, River Hill High School<\/p>\n<p><strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> Place<\/strong> in Banking &amp;
