{"id":3882,"date":"2017-01-10T16:45:51","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T21:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=3882"},"modified":"2017-01-10T16:54:29","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T21:54:29","slug":"college-program-announced-for-maryland-juvenile-services-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/college-program-announced-for-maryland-juvenile-services-center\/","title":{"rendered":"College Program Announced For Maryland Juvenile Services Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em>Victor Cullen Students Take Online Courses Through Frederick Community College<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>BALTIMORE\u00a0\u2013 \u00a0Students at one of Maryland\u2019s Juvenile Services facilities have started taking community college classes under a new agreement formally announced last week.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible students at the Victor Cullen Center in Sabillasville are taking online courses offered by Frederick Community College. Two students have already started their coursework, with more soon to join.<\/p>\n<p>The exciting new program, \u201cBuilding Bridges Toward College Success,\u201d held a ribbon cutting on Friday at the Victor Cullen Center Library.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy providing new academic opportunities, we keep students engaged in learning and focused on the future,\u201d said Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools. \u201cThe new program at Victor Cullen is designed as a launch pad for these students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Duffy, director of dual enrollment at Frederick Community College, says the program offers an important pathway to further education.\u00a0 \u201cEducation is the great equalizer and students need to have access to rigorous coursework to help them achieve their long term goals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>MSDE and Frederick Community College signed a memorandum of understanding last fall, setting the stage for today\u2019s announcement.\u00a0 Only students who have completed their high school requirements and proven their ability to do college-level work are eligible.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/marylandpublicschools.org\/programs\/Pages\/JSE\/index.aspx\">Juvenile Services Education (JSE) program<\/a> within MSDE provides educational services for youths detained and committed by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. Students receive core instruction in mathematics, English language arts, social studies, and science.\u00a0 Career Technology Education courses are also offered, and GED preparation programs are provided.\u00a0 JSE serves approximately 550 youth on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>MSDE is continuing to strengthen the educational offerings and resources for Maryland\u2019s Juvenile Services Education programs.\u00a0 Last fall, for example, MSDE brought 300 tablet devices to JSE classrooms, providing enhanced instruction and support to students, as well as increasing student engagement in the learning process.
