{"id":23437,"date":"2019-09-25T14:37:50","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T18:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=23437"},"modified":"2019-09-25T14:37:50","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T18:37:50","slug":"maryland-homegrown-school-lunch-week-showcases-local-food-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/maryland-homegrown-school-lunch-week-showcases-local-food-in-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week  Showcases Local Food in Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Denton Elementary School Kick-Off Event Thursday, September 26<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DENTON, MD<\/strong> <strong>(September 25, 2019)<\/strong> \u2013 Students across Maryland will get a taste of fresh, locally produced food for school lunches during the 12th annual Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week, September 30 &#8211; October 4. \u00a0A statewide kick-off event this week in Denton, Caroline County will include federal, state, and local officials, tastings of local food products, and a reading to students of <strong><em>Before We Eat: Farm to Table<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland schools serve more than 405,000 healthy meals to students each day, and during Homegrown School Lunch Week much of that nutritious fare comes from our local farms,\u201d said Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools. \u201cMaryland is a national leader in Farm to School initiatives, spending more than $18 million annually in local food purchases. Homegrown School Lunch Week allows us an opportunity to celebrate that commitment and the dedicated work of our schools to provide healthy choices for children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Homegrown School Lunch Week is a component of the Jane Lawton Farm to School Program, introduced in 2008. \u00a0The program is designed to educate students about the origin of their food, how it is produced, and the benefits of a healthy diet. It also seeks to expand market opportunities for Maryland farmers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT:<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week Statewide Kick-off Event<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHEN:<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thursday, September 26, 2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10:30am \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Speaking program begins<\/li>\n<li>11:00am.
