\nMaryland State Superintendent of Schools Lillian M. Lowery issued the following statement today in response to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan\u2019s announcement on state assessment and educator evaluations.\u00a0 Secretary Duncan said that states will have the opportunity to request a delay in using assessment results for teacher and principal evaluation during this transition to higher standards, better state assessments and new teacher and principal evaluation systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cSecretary\u00a0Duncan’s\u00a0announcement demonstrates his\u00a0ongoing engagement with educators in the\u00a0field and his willingness to\u00a0respond to issues raised with reasonable flexibility. \u00a0We are pleased in Maryland that we\u00a0were granted flexibility for school years 2013-14 and\u00a02014-15, and we will continue to work with\u00a0our federal partners\u00a0to ensure that State Law and Federal Law align in the best interest of our students and educators.\u201d<\/p>\n
